Documents
Most nationalities — including the US, UK, EU, and Australia — can use India's e-Visa, applied for online before departure check before you go. Apply at least a week ahead (four days is the official minimum, but don't cut it close), and carry a printout — some checkpoints still like paper. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. The e-Visa covers tourism; it does not cover journalism, missionary work, or mountaineering expeditions, if any of those are your plans.
One administrative note: in August 2026 the state government officially renamed the state "Keralam" — reported by a single trade outlet so far check before you go. Signage, tickets, and official documents are transitioning; "Kerala" still works everywhere. Don't be confused if you see both.
Money
The Indian rupee (INR) is the currency. The practical rules:
- Cards work in city hotels, restaurants, and larger operators. Cash rules everywhere else — markets, auto-rickshaws, small towns, temple donations, toddy shops.
- ATMs are widespread in cities and towns; use bank-affiliated machines and withdraw in daylight. Carry enough cash before heading into the hills or the backwater villages.
- UPI (India's instant-payment system) is now usable by some foreign visitors via approved apps — convenient where accepted, but don't depend on it; cash is the fallback that always works. check before you go
- Tipping: not obligatory, but appreciated — 10% in restaurants that don't add a service charge, small amounts for guides and drivers (₹200–500/day for a good driver, scaled to the trip).
Safety: the honest picture
Kerala is one of India's safer states for travelers, and the data backs the reputation:
- The UK Foreign Office carries no Kerala-specific warning (India-wide restrictions apply only to the Pakistan border areas, J&K, and Manipur) check before you go.
- The US State Department rates India Level 2 (exercise increased caution) with no Kerala-specific elevation check before you go.
- 11 crimes against foreign tourists were registered in Kerala in 2024 — behind Delhi (63), Karnataka (28), Himachal Pradesh (21), and Goa (16) check before you go. Kerala's charge-sheeting rate was India's highest at 94.5% check before you go — when crimes are reported, they're pursued.
Standard India precautions still apply: don't flash valuables, use ride-hailing or hotel cars at night, keep to main routes after dark, and be extra alert in crowded festival zones (Thrissur Pooram draws ~1.9 million people check before you go — pickpockets love a crowd). Emergency number: 112.
Health
- Vaccines: routine boosters plus hepatitis A/typhoid as your doctor advises; start 6–8 weeks before departure. There's no yellow-fever requirement for Kerala.
- Water: don't drink the tap. Bottled or filtered water everywhere; most hotels provide it.
- Food: eat where it's busy and the turnover is high — the busiest local restaurant is almost always the safest. Street food is a highlight, not a hazard, if you follow the crowds.
- Mosquitoes: dengue exists; repellent and long sleeves at dusk, especially on the backwaters.
- Nipah: in January 2026, five Nipah cases were confirmed in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts; the WHO recommended no travel or trade restrictions, and regional screening was precautionary check before you go. It's a watch-item, not a trip-canceller — but check the current status before you go if you're heading north.
- The sun is equatorial and serious — high-SPF sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, even on overcast days.
- Travel insurance with medical evacuation is strongly recommended. Kerala's private hospitals (especially Kochi) are excellent — medical tourism is a real industry here — but evacuation coverage is cheap peace of mind.
Disruption risks, plainly stated
- Monsoon landslides: the July 2024 Wayanad disaster killed at least 358 people check before you go, and a July 2026 slide near Kalladi triggered mass cancellations check before you go. In monsoon season, check hill-station conditions and avoid hillside stays during heavy-rain warnings.
- Strikes: the February 2026 Bharat Bandh shut the state for 24 hours — buses off the roads, travelers stranded check before you go. Kerala's strike culture is real; keep a buffer day and check local news.
- Politics: the Congress-led UDF won 102 of 140 assembly seats in May 2026, ending a decade of LDF rule, with a peaceful transfer check before you go. No traveler impact beyond the usual — but it's the context behind the state's ambitious new tourism targets.
Traveling responsibly
Kerala has institutionalized responsible tourism further than almost any Indian state — the Kerala Responsible Tourism Mission Society runs programs spanning community tourism, local employment, local procurement, women's enterprises, and rural tourism, plus an official classification framework for hotels and resorts on economic, socio-cultural, and environmental criteria check before you go. This isn't greenwashing; it's infrastructure. Use it:
- Stay in homestays and community-run places where you can — the money stays local, and the experience is better.
- Ask your hotel whether it participates in the RT classification. Operators listen to guests more than regulators.
- The backwaters are stressed by their own popularity — refuse single-use plastic, and choose houseboat operators with proper waste disposal (not straight into the lake).
- Temples, mosques, churches, and shrines are living places of worship. Dress modestly, remove footwear where required, ask before photographing people, and accept that some moments aren't for cameras.
